When reading an e-mail in Mutt, how can I scroll line by line?

Hello.

When reading an e-mail in Mutt, how can I scroll its text one line at
a time when using the up and down arrow keys? In Pine, I can use these
two arrow keys to scroll my messages when reading. I cannot seem to do
this. Sure, I can use the space bar, but that skips too much.

I searched on newsgroups and Web that can be done with a mouse scroller,
but I don't use those.

Thank you in advance. :)

Hitting <return> in my Mutt instance will scroll the message one line at
a time. The command mapped to it is called "next-line", so you can map
it to anything you want in your .muttrc

Thanks. That is a weird default key bind to use. I guess I am spoiled with
space bar.

No, that's the default in many programs (more, less, slrn, ...)

Interesting. I never noticed that with more and less command. I don't use
slrn, but I do use tin.

Not weird at all, when you remember that this is the default behavior
for more(1) and its derivatives. Not all terminals have up and down
arrows.

Using the <space> to page down and <return> to scroll one line are the
same keybindings used in other pagers like less(1) and more(1).

They are different from typical GUI keybindings, but who said that was
a bad thing? :)

Is that a 286 or are you just running Windows?

Weird or not, you can always change the key bindings to suit your
taste or habits. To use the up and down arrows in the pager, simply
put these lines in your muttrc:

bind pager <up> previous-line
bind pager <down> next-line

You can read more about this in the mutt manual, section 3.3,
"Changing the default key bindings".

Gary
