What are some good terminal clients that are minimalistic, support
SOCKS5 proxies, and follows the UNIX philosophy?
Also the client I want is hopefully GPL'd or at least having a Open-
Source license.
I use slrn with ssl support since a long time on Linux, FreeBSD and
Mac OS X. Associated with the Jed editor (with mail-mode.sl).
since you mentioned mail, mutt has NNTP support, haven't done it yet
Never find better.
Latest version downloaded, compiled at time on Mac OS X in less than
five minutes.

mail-mode.sl is an e-mail editing mode for jed.

15 years old, I used Mutt with the nntp patch (already with Jed as
editor).
But when I discovered slrn, I finally adopted it for reading news.

If you're looking for something for reading news and mail, then Mutt
with the nntp support is a good choice.
